GWO Slinger Signaller vs Crane and Hoist Training

Choose GWO Slinger Signaller for the load-handling and signalling role; consider Crane and Hoist Basic User for operating the small fixed lifting equipment covered by that standard. Inspection and Maintenance is a separate module. Start with the employer’s task description, then confirm the training, equipment familiarisation and authorisation required for that assignment.

Which standard is current?

Checked on 25 October 2026, GWO lists Slinger Signaller V4, dated 2 May 2023, and Crane and Hoist V2, dated 2 May 2025. Slinger Signaller addresses simple lifting operations under an established plan or with known hazards. These dates identify the published standards; they do not establish the expiry date of an individual training record.

This guide helps a candidate or training coordinator select the questions to ask before booking. It does not describe how to attach a load, give lifting signals or operate equipment. Those practical decisions belong within supervised training and the employer’s approved arrangements. A job advert that says only “GWO required” is too broad to decide which lifting course to purchase.

The distinction between user and maintenance training comes from the GWO Crane and Hoist standard. It also expects further familiarisation or equipment-specific training at the actual site. Do not read “crane” as a universal crane-operator qualification: the published scope concerns small fixed cranes and hoists used in wind-industry work.

A technician may need more than one role, but that should be an explicit decision. Ask for a written allocation of duties rather than assuming that one course title covers the entire lifting team. For example, a request to support a maintenance crew is incomplete until the employer explains whether the person will handle loads, operate equipment, inspect it, or combine selected duties.

What does the course not settle?

The GWO Crane and Hoist V2 document, section 7.1 excludes dynamic lifting from CHBU. Its general requirements also distinguish course entry from subsequent workplace requirements. A valid CHBU record, or similar brand-specific crane and hoist user training, is an entry prerequisite for CHIM. Ask the provider to assess the evidence you hold before assuming you can enter the maintenance module.

Use the equipment description, work location and actual task to test whether a proposed course is relevant. A turbine service hoist, a large mobile construction crane and equipment used for personnel movement should not be grouped into a single training requirement because their names contain similar words. If the assignment falls outside the stated learning outcomes, request a different training and competence assessment plan from the employer.

A checklist for the employer before booking

  • Write the assignment: list the person’s expected duties, equipment family, work setting and reporting line. Separate tasks they will perform from tasks they will only observe.
  • Name the module: record the full title and module code requested by the client. If several documents use different terminology, resolve the difference before purchasing training.
  • Identify the remaining requirements: ask who arranges equipment familiarisation, supervision, workplace assessment and task authorisation. Allocate those activities to a named organisation.
  • Check existing evidence: provide relevant training records and experience to the responsible reviewer. Ask what can be accepted and what gap remains; avoid booking every available course by default.
  • Set a decision date: obtain acceptance before travel or mobilisation costs become committed. Keep the confirmation with the training request so that a later coordinator can understand the choice.

For a candidate, the most useful email is a short description of the intended job plus the employer’s module request. For a coordinator buying several places, use a separate row for each person and role. Different members of one crew may have different gaps even when they travel to the same project. This makes a course quotation easier to compare and reduces avoidable rebooking.

Questions for the training provider

Ask the provider to confirm its certified scope for the exact module and delivery location, the applicable standard version, entry evidence, teaching and assessment language, and practical attendance requirements. Request a clear explanation of assessment, the training record issued, administration, and what happens if additional assessment is needed. A course being advertised is not confirmation that a particular intake has a place available.

For the commercial comparison, request the complete fee and inclusions, dates, cancellation terms, required personal equipment and any separate travel or accommodation arrangements. Keep the training booking and the employer’s acceptance as two distinct confirmations. The provider can describe its course; the employer must decide whether that course meets the assignment’s needs.

Gridinta’s GWO training page explains its referral relationship with training partner Novikontas. Training is partner-delivered. Confirm Slinger Signaller availability directly with the provider; this article does not establish a current Crane and Hoist course offer, location, price or timetable. For the wider safety-training context, read what GWO certification means in wind energy. Where an enquiry also concerns employment, keep the course purchase separate from any hiring decision.

Create a useful handover after training

Retain the exact module record, completion date and the employer’s review outcome in the mobilisation file. Record any outstanding equipment familiarisation or workplace assessment with an owner and due date. If the job changes after booking, reopen the role comparison. A well-organised training file makes an unresolved requirement visible; it should never turn an unanswered question into an assumed approval.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

Does Slinger Signaller also qualify me to operate a crane?
Do not assume so. Ask the employer to distinguish the load-handling and signalling role from equipment operation and specify the evidence required for each duty.
Is CHIM the same as a user course?
No. CHIM concerns inspection and maintenance. The GWO standard identifies a CHBU record or similar brand-specific user training as an entry prerequisite, which the provider should check.
Does this article confirm a course booking with Gridinta?
No. Gridinta refers candidates to its training partner. Confirm the exact module, availability, location, assessment and fee with the training provider before booking.
Should every wind technician buy all three modules?
No universal package follows from these course names. Match training to assigned duties and have the employer review existing competence and remaining requirements.
