IRATA vs SPRAT: Differences, Levels and Which to Choose
IRATA and SPRAT are separate industrial rope access certification systems, not interchangeable versions of one qualification. Both assess technicians through three levels and both issue certifications with three-year validity, but their progression rules, administration and company frameworks differ. IRATA normally requires one year and 1,000 logged working hours at each current level before an upgrade; SPRAT normally requires six months and 500 documented hours at the current level before advancing.
Which should you choose? Use the scheme explicitly accepted by the employer, client, tender and jurisdiction where you intend to work. IRATA is frequently specified in Gridinta’s European industrial, wind and offshore environment, while SPRAT is an established route in North America and is also used elsewhere. Neither certificate guarantees a job or replaces trade competence, medical fitness, offshore training, site induction or legal requirements. What Are IRATA and SPRAT?
IRATA is the Industrial Rope Access Trade Association. Its Training, Assessment and Certification Scheme defines the technician grades, while the International Code of Practice and membership requirements address the managed system used by member companies. An IRATA card belongs to a technician; it does not by itself make the technician’s employer an IRATA member company. IRATA’s member-verification guidance specifically warns that simply employing IRATA technicians does not demonstrate compliance with its company operating standards.
SPRAT is the Society of Professional Rope Access Technicians. It develops consensus standards and administers technician certification. Its current certification overview requires a written test and performance-based test assessed by a SPRAT-appointed evaluator. SPRAT membership, technician certification and approval to host an evaluation are related but distinct statuses. SPRAT also states that it does not currently accredit rope access training providers; it focuses on approving Evaluation Session Hosts.
How Do the Technician Levels Compare?
Level 1: entry-level rope access competence
Both schemes start at Level 1 with no prior rope access work-hour requirement. IRATA defines Level 1 as able to perform a specified range of rope access tasks under Level 3 supervision. SPRAT’s current requirements assess fundamental manoeuvres, system construction, raising and lowering, and a defined rescue exercise. In either system, Level 1 is a rope access qualification—not proof that its holder is a competent welder, blade technician, electrician or NDT inspector.
Level 2: broader rigging, systems and rescue skills
IRATA Level 2 adds more complex rigging, rescue and rope access skills but still works under Level 3 supervision. SPRAT Level 2 builds on Level 1 and adds system analysis, vertical aid climbing, more demanding rigging and rescue exercises. The important progression difference is the threshold: IRATA normally asks for 1,000 hours and one year at Level 1; SPRAT normally asks for 500 hours and six months. These thresholds are not a quality score and do not make the grades automatically equivalent.
Level 3: advanced competence and supervision
IRATA Level 3 can take responsibility for rope access safety in work projects and must also hold appropriate current first aid. IRATA member-company worksites require a Level 3 rope access safety supervisor. SPRAT Level 3 demonstrates competence across lower-level requirements plus advanced system analysis, rigging and rescue. Under SPRAT Safe Practices, the employer designates a rope access supervisor against the worksite requirements; Level 3 is the normal basis, with limited site-dependent criteria published for eligible Level 2 technicians. How Do Training, Assessment and Logbooks Differ?
IRATA candidates train through an IRATA Trainer Member Company and are assessed by an independent IRATA assessor. Passing the assessment does not itself guarantee certification: IRATA verifies prerequisites and the certification process before issuing the certificate, ID card and initial logbook. Under SPRAT’s Rope Access Certification Requirements, version 25A, a candidate needs training within six months before initial certification at Level 1, 2 or 3. An independent evaluator administers the practical evaluation, and a written test is also required. SPRAT issues certification after reviewing the successful documentation. Experience for an upgrade must be documented in accordance with Safe Practices; that record may be an acceptable logbook, but technicians should confirm the current evidence format with the evaluation host.
Validity, Recertification and Switching Schemes
Both schemes currently issue three-year certifications. IRATA requires revalidation training and assessment every three years and requires appropriate refresher training after 180 days or more without rope access work. SPRAT states that a subsequent certification completed in the final six months of a current certificate runs for three years from the existing expiry date; outside that window it runs from the evaluation date. Candidates should verify booking timing and any expired-certificate rules directly with the scheme.
Switching is possible only through the receiving scheme’s current process. IRATA TACS provides for conversion from certain non-IRATA qualifications, with requirements available through Trainer Member Companies. SPRAT’s Direct Entry process requires pre-approval, evidence of a recognised external certification and documented experience before an upper-level evaluation. Neither route is automatic cross-recognition, and a client may still require a specific active certificate.
How Should a Technician Choose?
- Collect current job adverts, framework requirements and client specifications for the region and sector you want to enter.
- Ask employers whether they require IRATA, accept SPRAT, accept either, or impose project-specific conversion or supervision conditions.
- Verify the provider, evaluation route, total fee, prerequisites, certification timing and retake terms with the relevant official directory or host.
- Plan the separate trade, medical, offshore and site qualifications needed for the work—not just the rope access card.

How Should a Client Specify Rope Access Competence?
A useful tender names the accepted certification scheme and current level for each role, then separately states the company operating framework, supervisor criteria, minimum team, rescue planning, trade competence, medical or offshore requirements, equipment rules, local law and verification process. Ask for technician numbers and expiry dates, but do not treat cards as proof of the contractor’s full management system.
For an IRATA-member scope, verify the company and membership reference in IRATA’s directory as well as each technician. For a SPRAT-based scope, verify technician status and confirm how the employer’s rope access program applies SPRAT Safe Practices and the presiding regulatory requirements.
